Degenerative Disc Disease

As we age, the spinal discs in our body can become weakened, worn out, or otherwise impaired. This is referred to as Degenerative Disc Disease. It is most prevalent in the lower back (lumbar region) or neck (cervical region) where the discs can become compressed, leading to decreased amounts of vital fluids. This can cause the discs to thin, reducing the spacing between the vertebrae.

Disc degeneration is a common affliction that can be triggered by a number of factors, such as smoking, obesity, and certain strenuous physical activities. Initially, the disease manifests as small cracks in the outer layer of the disc. As the cracks grow, the disc begins to bulge and degeneration is well underway. Those who are particularly susceptible to this condition should take extra caution when engaging in activities that could cause further harm.

The Spinal Decompression technique can alleviate discomfort by loosening and stretching the spine, which helps to relieve the gravitational pressure on the spine. This creates room for nutrients and oxygen to circulate back into damaged discs and initiate the healing process. The treatment is straightforward, as the patient only needs to lie down on the machine for 24 minutes per session. During the session, you can enjoy your favorite activities, such as reading, meditating, or taking a quick nap.

Our spinal decompression treatment is completely safe. It’s also comfortable and gentle, with no known side effects. At Grosse Pointe Spine Center, we’ve performed this treatment many times while treating disc damage. Our patients have provided amazing testimonials about the positive effects they’ve experienced.

Essentially, spinal decompression slowly relaxes and stretches the spine, eliminating downward forces of gravity and creating a vacuum that allows nutrients and oxygen to flow back into the disc. This helps kickstart the healing process. Very convenient, patients simply lie down for 24 minutes per session on the world-class DRX9000. During that time, some read while others relax, meditate or fall asleep.

The procedure is FDA-Cleared, gentle, and comfortable, with no risks or side effects at all.
